The Impact
The Massani Girls High School and Primary School is home to 300 high school age girls and over 150 K-6th graders. This remote school has been meeting the educational and wellfare needs of children for over 70 years. Massani is tucked into the mountain region of Machakos county and is home to many challenges, including a major lack of access to clean water. Each high school student was issued a small bucket to fetch water from an unreliable spring outside of the school property. That small bucket was then used for bathing every 3 days. If a girl spilled her bucket, that water was lost and she would have to wait until the following week to get more. And that was just for bathing. Imagine the hardship for cooking, cleaning and staying hydrated while relying on rain water and a spring that often ran dry.
The Amani Foundation supplied the first ever, deep borehole, powered well in this community. Now not only the students, but local families have access to unlimited, clean water.
"The well has changed everything here! The students can now concentrate more on their studies and less on where water will come from. The local community now has a source of fresh, clean water as well. Truly, water is life!"
- Felistas Mawia John, Head Matron Massani Girls School
